Book Review: First, Last and Only: Football

This book is for the hardcore football fans that want to increase their knowledge in their game. A little book, “First, Lasts, and Onlys: Football Facts from the last 150 years” is a book for the fans and written by a fan. Paul Donnelley is a huge fan of football and clearly, after reading his book, you’ll know and understand that this man knows his football and enjoys writing about it.

A fun read.. full of fun, interesting football facts that will be useful ..when bragging about knowing these facts, in front of your friends (you will be the only one who knows these facts).

You can find this book in Virgin Kuwait and other bookstores. Enjoy

Summer course!!

I simply hate summer courses, never took them and will do anything to avoid them! Unfortunately, I'm gona take my first summer course here at AUK.. Although it's only 4 weeks, I'm not really in the mood to go every day in this hot weather and attend a history class. Don't get me wrong, I love history.. I just hate summer courses!!

The one and only good thing that will keep me going is the fact that I'm going to London this summer course finishes!

A Coffeeholic!!

A Coffeeholic is :
- A coffee-addict.
- Addicted to coffee and/or caffeine.
- Can't get enough of coffee.

Unfortunately, I'm all of them. I'm addicted to coffee and can’t even function without coffee. This picture basically describes how I feel about coffee. My morning coffee is the most important one because I refuse and will not do anything or even start working until I get my morning vanilla latté from Starbucks!

note: this post was written while the writer drank his vanilla latté!!

The Strange Powers of the Placebo Effect

New Nottingham Forest Shirt 11/12

Nottingham was one of the first places that I called home. Lived there for more than three years and enjoyed every second of it. I discovered my love and passion for football (soccer) there and other than Manchester United, Nottingham Forest was the first football team that I supported and loved.

They did not have a good season this year, failing to win their playoffs, but hopefully they will do a better job next year with this awesome kit.

The Art of Public Speaking

If you’re a student or a worker, you will have to master this skill. If you want to perform an actual presentation or just speak in public, it’s important that YOU master this skill. It’s not easy to do so, but there are ways and methods to help you be a good public speaker. I will talk about these methods and support them with a personal story.

Nearly every public speaker gets nervous. It’s in our human nature to do so and that’s a big problem for a public speaker. But the important part in not having the problem, it’s how you solve this problem and overcome your stage fright. Although people have different levels of this fear, they all can overcome this problem with the same methods! Like for example, Obama overcame his fears a long time ago .. He always said that he used to get nervous when doing presentations in college. Being nervous and having a panic attack when doing your presentation is a normal thing that happens to every public speaker. It’s actually a given! If you can feel nervousness, YOU ARE ALIVE!

Now, how can we overcome this fear?! The answer is simple, PRACTICE. When you practice your speech, you will master every aspect of it. You will know when to stop and when to lower your voice. If you make a lot of mistakes, you will notice them in when you practice so that you can solve them before doing the actual presentation. Practicing your presentation is the best way to overcoming your fear. Because when you know what you will say, you limit the number of mistakes in your presentation.

Although practice will help master or at least sketch your presentation, it won’t eliminate your fear or the nervousness that you will feel while doing a presentation.

While doing a presentation or even practicing for one, take a deep breath and think about the audience for a second there! They are people just like you and they will feel the same nervousness that you will feel if they are in your place. Let your brain believe that you are doing a presentation to aliens that can’t feel anything. That way if you stumble or mistake a word, no one will care! Because they are ALIENS! To think about it, does the audience care about your mistakes or even judge you when you make one!? The obvious answer is NO! People will not care about your mistakes. They will not judge you if you mistake the whole presentation or if you stumble while saying a complicated word. They JUST DON’T CARE!!!! So, when you think about how they don’t care about what you will do in the presentation, you will not care about them or their judgment! The whole goal for listening to a speaker is to get entertained, so as a speaker you have to do just that without caring about others judgment!

After joining the American University of Kuwait, I was introduced to the world of public speaking. I never did a presentation (how sad is that) before. 12 years of attending and learning about how we (Muslims) were once rolling the world of science, we never had a presentation! And I think that this is the main problem or reason for this fear that we feel now. We never had to do a presentation and suddenly we have to do one in front of people I don’t know!! That will increase our fear and nervousness!! I’m talking about students from government high schools and not privet. We didn’t know anything about public speaking or how to perform one! At AUK I was asked to do a presentation in my first week. I was nervous and scared, but I didn’t want to think about this fear and just enjoy my time doing something I never did before. That was actually what my teacher (Robert Hobbs) said: “enjoy your presentation. Entertain yourself before entertaining us”. And that’s what I did. My first presentation was a 5 minute presentation about myself. I really didn’t know what to say about myself. I asked the teacher for help!! Hobbs suggested that I should write the whole presentation and then rather than memorizing it, study it. That’s the second method for overcoming your stage fright. Writing you presentation on paper and then adding the main bullet points of your presentation.

I wrote the whole presentation and the main points that I will talk about. After studying and knowing what I’m going to say, I was confidence. This method helped me a lot because it made me realize that a presentation is similar to an essay. When you write an essay, you need certain things that will improve your essay. The same thing goes with a presentation. In an essay, you will begin with the introduction, then the body, and finally the conclusion. In a presentation, you will do the same thing. It will help a lot and even if you didn’t actually say the same thing you wrote, at least you said something!

Public speaking is a fun world, a fun experience, and a fun hobby do master. I would like to be a regular speaker, so that I’m always practicing and improving this skill. In AUK (The American University of Kuwait), I’m sure that I will do many more presentation and I thank them for that. I never knew how to do so and now I’m actually good at it. There is a class here in AUK, an English class which is only about public speaking. English 108. I really recommend taking this subject (I’m taking it this semester). Like my former teacher said: “life is all about having fun with education and the best example is when you do a presentation”.

Classics: Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels And Stories By Arthur Conan Doyle

I’ve always loved the character (Sherlock Homles) and enjoyed most of his adventures.  Although the Robert Downey Jr’s movie was great, I prefer reading Homles’s books instead. There are many books that collect Homles’s first ever adventure but this particular one has both the begging’s of  Sherlock Homles and also the final adventure of Sir Arthur’s famous character.

Got this copy from a local used- book store, here in Kuwait, called “Better Books”. They have a good collection of used books that you will not find in other book stores. The copy that I bought was old and dusty.. it had a (classical) feel to it..

All in all, it was a great refreshing read .. a classic book that many should buy and read over and over again.

[BBQ] fun with family

I love Barbecuing with my family.. It's more fun and I get to be with the people I treasure the most!! And in order for us to do that, the weather must be cold or at least not hot.. In Kuwait, we don't have a lot of cold days so we BBQ with the few cold days that we get!

Being with family is one of those things that I will always treasure the most .. And BBQ is one of those ways that help keep this treasure alive!!

Hello I'm Bo Ali and My [new] major is English!

I love writing, that's why I have two blogs, and when I got the choice to pick my major, I picked a major that everyone thinks it's a good major. Everyone besides me!! I picked Finance! For the first two semesters I actually did great and got good grades but there was always this feeling that I'm was not in the right place! I didn't see myself as a Finance major graduate! I felt that I needed to change my major and study the thing I love the most, writing.

I changed my major to English literature and language. This picture represents how I felt back then when I first got my approval and got my major sheet!

[Marina] Relaxing!

I just changed my major this semester to English literature. I was a finance major but I didn't see myself working and living my whole life as a finance graduate! I was into English literature, always loved writing essays and non fiction papers. So I changed my major this semester to English literature. It's the best decision I ever made!

But with a new major comes a lot of work. And with a major like English.. believe my it's hard work! So when I find time to relax, I usually go to this place! I go there to just relax!

[London] ready!

It's always the same routine! Spending the night before preparing for the trip, going to the airport at 5:30, checking in, and finally, getting my Vanilla Latte and just waiting for my flight! This picture describes what i just said, getting my coffee and just waiting! Waiting and knowing exactly what's ahead. A wonderful summer trip to London. When I see this picture, it gets me in the right mood or should I say the London Mood. It gets me thinking about all the comic book stores and the football stores that I love in London.

I always use this photo as my display picture when I'm on my way to the airport. I just love how this picture really describes my situation at that time.

[Dust] ('3obar)

Life stops when there is Gobar!!

Gobar is the Arabic word for dust. Recently Kuwait went through many dust storms and you can see in this picture how this dust storm is blocking our home view! We got used to this kinda weather. We don't prefer it but none the less, we got used to it!!

I hope it rains so that we can get rid of this dust or Gobar!!!

[London] What a Wonderful day!

In a sunny London evening, everything was just perfect. PURE happiness! I was going to see one of London’s famous landmarks, The Big Ben and on my way, this picture was created. That day became one of the best days in my life and throughout this picture, I will always remember that day and how happy I was.
And Although I don’t usually enjoy going to these places, on that particular day, all I wanted to do is to stand there and enjoy the view! What I wonderful day!
